Future Feminist Archive is a yearlong project across Australia, in which artists, archivist and art historians engage with archives and collections of all kinds to create exhibitions, workshops, performances and publishing outcomes. Future Feminist Archive is, therefore, styled as a “hypothetical” question. The project will forge connections between diverse community histories and current ideas relating to feminism in response to growing interest in the role of archives. Help investigate the many forms that a Future Feminist Archive might take — real and virtual, activist action!

Future Feminist Archive features a variety of engagements with the archive, from official records to neglected artefacts, alternate documents, and intergenerational passing on of memories. The artwork Artist Archive, in capturing the voices of 100 Sydney-based artists interviewed ten years ago about their understanding of their art practice, acts as a fascinating time-capsule of Australian contemporary art. Daughters Mothers comprises the creative exchanges between four daughter-mother partnerships, allowing for a rich exploration of the intersection between personal and public histories. Feminist Film Archive screens a series of pioneering films from the 1970s credited as ongoing influences to contemporary Australian experimental film. And The Parramatta Female Factory Memory Project offers an exemplar of how unofficial stories can create a far more complex history of familiar places, one that can assist in reconciliation with the past.

Artist Talks
Join the artists from the Daughters Mothers group show (part of Future Feminist Archive) at Sydney College of the Arts Galleries on Saturday 7 March from 11-1 pm. Daughters and mothers Alison and Joan Clouston, Sue and Peg Pedley, Toni Warburton, and Judy and Joan Watson will discuss their works and the life-long creative partnerships that underpin their contemporary practice.

A Symposium on recovering lost Feminist archives and imagining the new presented by Contemporary Art and Feminism with the Art Gallery of NSW Archives for the 40th Anniversary of International Women’s Year in honour of Joan Kerr. ‘Future Feminist Archive’ is a yearlong project styled as a “hypothetical” question. The Grand Opening from 4 to 10 March comprises a cluster of exhibitions and staggered anniversary talks in Sydney and elsewhere (Hobart, Wollongong and Newcastle). Thereafter, Future Feminist Archive and the DAAO go on a road trip. The first FFA/DAAO regional symposia is at Wollongong Art Gallery on Sunday 15 March and thereafter a series of regional symposia and workshops. We report back in Sydney in October on our activities and collection and archive research. In October the Women’s Art Register plans a festival to commemorate its 40th Anniversary. Help investigate the many forms that a Future Feminist Archive might take — real and virtual, activist action!
